UTHSC Anti-Virus Client Instructions for Windows 95, 98 and ME

Please follow these instructions to download and install McAfee VirusScan for Windows 95 and 98.

*Before beginning, make sure and install all Windows updates by browsing to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com via Internet Explorer.  Continue this process until the Critical Update section says zero to install. Problems can occur if computer is not fully updated.*

1. Click here to download a file called dcom95.exe.  Choose "Save" and then choose to "Save in:" the Desktop.

2.  Run dcom95.exe by double clicking on the file on the desktop.
NOTE: After you install DCOM95.EXE, you must restart the computer.

3.  Click here to download a file called vcredist.exe.  Choose "Save" and then choose to "Save in:" the Desktop.

4. Run vcredist.exe by double clicking on the file on the desktop.
NOTE: After you install VCREDIST.EXE, you must restart the computer.

5.  Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.  Find "Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition" and click "Add/Remove" to uninstall Norton AntiVirus.  If you do not have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition listed proceed to the next step.

6. Open up Internet Explorer (recommended browser for this installation).  Browse to http://antivirus.utmem.edu/ and click on "Download McAfee Anti-Virus". On the next page click on the Windows NT/2000/XP link.

7. If you get a security alert, Click OK. On the subsequent page, click on the button that says "Click here to continue with the download".

8. Choose whether your machine is a server or a workstation.  If you don't know, choose workstation.

9. Choose the operating system that is on your computer.

10. Choose the number of licenses you need (this will usually be one).

11. Enter your Net ID and Net ID password to access the download page.  If you do not know your Net ID click here for information about Net IDs.  If you do not know your password, please call the HelpDesk at 448-2222 for assistance.

12. Verify all the information and read the paragraph.  Click the button "I agree with the above paragraph and wish to continue."

13. A new page will come up and your download should start automatically, choose "Save" and the elect to save in the "Desktop".   When the download is complete, close out all of your programs and click on the program (on your desktop) to start the installation process.

14. The McAfee distribution splash page will appear.  Click "Next" to begin the installation.  Copying and configuring will take several minutes at least and may take as long as 8 or 9 minutes.

15. Click Finish to end the installation process.

16. The machine must be restarted.  Norton AntiVirus will not be removed until a reboot is performed.

17. When your installation is complete, make certain that a shield outlined in blue with a red V is present next to the clock in the bottom right hand corner.  If this does not appear contact the HelpDesk for additional assistance at 448-2222.
